چکیده

Remnant woodland areas are commonly part of livestock grazing operations in temperate Australia. These remnant can store substantial amounts carbon and have important biodiversity value, but at risk ongoing decline due to nutrient enrichment, overgrazing, clearing woody debris lack tree recruitment. The process compiling experimental farm-scale natural capital accounts (NCA) for 11 wool-growing businesses Australia demonstrated that some wool growers may be managing these ways sustained, times regenerated, other values. When managed sensitively, largely native provide forage shelter production while associated is also protected, cases regenerated. NCA highlighted farm net sequestration occur a farm-scale, substantially owing the management approach applied areas. potential approaches underpinned by ecosystem services provided grasses, forbs woodlands (i.e. low-input rather than enrichment pasture modification) contribute balancing emissions from more intensive within business. With current momentum worldwide aimed achieving zero emissions, there an opportunity has not existed previously conserve, sometimes regenerate, on farmland. This could reversing crisis loss this threatened helping reduce overall emissions.

Biodiversity co-benefits of policies to reduce forest-carbon emissions

1 Policies for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) under development through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will financially reward developing countries that reduce forest-based carbon emissions through initiatives to decrease deforestation and forest degradation, conserve and enhance forest-carbon stocks and promote sustainab...

Utilization of Natural Farm Resources for Promoting High Energy Efficiency in Low-Input Organic Farming

Both organic and conventional farming processes require energy input in the form of diesel fuel for farming equipment, animal feed, and fertilizer compounds. The most significant difference between the two methods is the use in conventional farming of mineral fertilizers and pesticides that are minimally employed in organic management. It is argued that organic farming is more environmentally f...

Increasing Demand for Natural Rubber Necessitates a Robust Sustainability Initiative to Mitigate Impacts on Tropical Biodiversity

Strong international demand for natural rubber is driving expansion of industrial-scale and smallholder monoculture plantations, with >2 million ha established during the last decade. Mainland Southeast Asia and Southwest China represent the epicenter of rapid rubber expansion; here we review impacts on forest ecosystems and biodiversity. We estimate that 4.3–8.5 million ha of additional rubber...

Agricultural opportunities to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

Agriculture is a source for three primary greenhouse gases (GHGs): CO(2), CH(4), and N(2)O. It can also be a sink for CO(2) through C sequestration into biomass products and soil organic matter. We summarized the literature on GHG emissions and C sequestration, providing a perspective on how agriculture can reduce its GHG burden and how it can help to mitigate GHG emissions through conservation...
